Periodontitis is a widespread but treatable disease. If periodontitis
would play a significant role in the etiology of systemic disease, this would
have enormous consequences for the dental profession. Many efforts have been
undertaken, therefore, to proof the hypothesis of periodontal disease as risk
factor for other diseases. However, although there exists high plausibility,
the proof for such a connection is still lacking. This review will summarize
the state of science on the association between periodontitis and adverse
pregnancy outcomes, cardio- and cerebrovascular disease, diabetes mellitus as
well as pulmonary diseases.
