The geriatic patient

Dag Schütz, Ingo Füsgen
Due to the demographic change even the patiens in the medical and dental practices become always elder. The elderly patients often are characterized by invalidity, multimorbidity and polymedication. Successful diagnosis and treatment of these patients is characterized by interdisciplinary. In order to develop a treatment without complication from the view of the dentists, next to a good knowledge of the organic correlations an interdisciplinary co-operation is needed. With age frequent symptoms like Halitosis, cerebrovascular diseases, dementia, endocarditis, diabetes mellitus and gastritis often are directly connected with dental problems and multimorbidity and polymedications. Patient discussions regarding possible connections as well as the integration in the multiprofessional geriatric team should characterize the dental daily practice with geriatic patients.
