| Composite resins are frequently applied for today's filling therapy,
for example as restorative materials, for build-ups, as pit and fissure
sealants and for cementation purposes. Most recently, resins were recommended
as root canal sealers too. Auxilliary materials, like acids and dentin
adhesives that shall improve the bond between composite resins and dental hard
tissues, also have to be considered. 'Compomers' are chemically and
'biologically' very similar to conventional composite resins. The applicability
of any type of dental material, like composite resin, is primarily based upon
its efficiency and safety from a scientific and legal point of view. The
efficacy is mainly evaluated using physical and chemical tests. Dependent upon
legal aspects, safety is investigated and finally assessed by means of
preclinical and clinical tests and studies. Aim of this review article is to
analyze and discuss the most important aspects of the biocompatibility of
composite resins, similar materials as well as auxilliary materials used in
combination with restorative resins. |
